Curt Froyen, Commander with the American Legion Baty Tucker Post 168 in Knoxville, says they are currently accepting nominations from Knoxville High School students to attend Girls State and Boys State.
Froyen says the Girls State and Boys State programs are both leadership programs and they traditionally take place in the month of June. Girls State is held at Drake University while the boys attend a program at Iowa State University.
“We typically take two girls and two boys each year. If we reach a point where we just can’t decide between two or three, we’ll take three,” Froyen tells KNIA/KRLS News.
The recommendations on the students come from the high school counselors. Then interviews with the students take place prior to the selections. The deadline for turning in the nominations is April 1.
