Following the death of a preschool student in a sledding accident Thursday evening, the Pella Community School District has prepared extra assistance for those who may need it when they return to class on Monday.

In two emails to parents of respective buildings, Pella Superintendent Greg Ebeling and Lincoln Elementary Principal Margaret Kirkwold discussed the passing of five year old Milly Zellmer, a preschool student at Lincoln, and what resources will be available for kids as they grieve the loss of a classmate and child.

District wide, Ebeling says a team comprised of school counselors, AEA, staff, and administration will be available at the schools to provide care and support over the next week.

“It is with great sadness we share with you that Milly Zellmer, one of our preschool students at Lincoln Elementary, passed away Thursday due to an accident. It is very difficult for all of us to face the death of a young person,” Ebeling wrote in his email to the district. “I know you join me in extending our heartfelt sympathy to Milly’s family.”

Kirkwold’s email included more specific details about how they will work with students at Lincoln Elementary upon their return, including those who many have been directly impacted or were present at the time of the accident.

“I know our greater Lincoln family is thinking of the Zellmer family, sending them love and sympathy at this incredibly challenging time,” Kirkwold wrote.

According to the Pella Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of West 4th Street and Fountain View Drive. A Ford F-150 struck the five-year-old Zellmer, who had entered the roadway on a sled from a nearby hill. The Pella Police Department is handling the investigation and is being assisted by the Iowa State Patrol.
