Marion County Engineer Tyler Christian has a message for those who travel in treacherous conditions. Christian tells KNIA/KRLS News it doesn’t take much ice at all to make a pavement slick and even a gravel road where the rock has been rolled down tight.
Christian talks about keeping the roads safe, “We had a significant snow event last week and bladed the roads and a lot of loose rock went with that snow to the edge of the road. So, our guys are out working this week to get that loose rock drug back out there for some traction and grip.”
Christian said if the road doesn’t have the necessary traction, he would recommend drivers to try and work their way toward the edge of the road where there would be a little bit of rock and the same for pavement, if it is extremely slick and accelerating and stopping is challenging it might be beneficial to get over to the shoulder on the gravel.
According to Christian, the obvious tips for driving is to allow plenty of time for stopping and reduce your speed in the event of ice, even more than snow.
