Tuesday’s Class 4A, Substate 1 final will feature two boys basketball programs rich in tradition.
Sixth-ranked Norwalk and No. 9 Sioux City East will tip off at 7:00 p.m. in Denison with a trip to the 4A State Tournament on the line. The Warriors are 19-3 overall and have won 15 straight games since January 3. The Black Raiders started the season 16-0, then lost back-to-back games before winning their last five to improve to 21-2.
Norwalk is seeking its first state tourney appearance as a Class 4A school and its first trip back to Wells Fargo Arena since winning the 3A state title in 2020. The Warriors also took home state runner-up trophies in 2009 and 2019. Overall, Norwalk has qualified for state eight times, including six appearances since 2000, and has a state tournament record of 10-8.
Sioux City East has been to state 20 times during the school’s long history, including 12 appearances since 2000. The Black Raiders’ all-time state tourney record is 24-20 and they are seeking their first trip back in four years. East claimed a pair of state titles in 1934 and 2002 and was the 4A state runner-up in 2012.
Tuesday’s winner will advance to the Class 4A state quarterfinals set for Wednesday, March 8, in Des Moines.
