Sophomore guard Bailey Birmingham of Norwalk has been named to the Class 4A Central All-District girls basketball team by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

Birmingham is one of 10 players on the team, which also includes girls from Dallas Center-Grimes, North Polk, Ballard, ADM, Indianola and Bondurant-Farrar. North Polk’s Clint Albertson is this year’s 4A Central District Coach of the Year.

Building off a solid freshman campaign in which she averaged nearly 10 points per game, Birmingham ranked eighth in Class 4A this season with a scoring average of 18.1. She also led the Warriors with 6.4 rebounds per game, 41 total steals and 102 free throws in 141 attempts. Birmingham made 42-of-150 three-pointers and added 29 assists.

Norwalk coach Jill Martin calls Birmingham a natural leader and a good teammate on and off the court.

“She’s such a great kid,” Martin said. She’s been busting her butt for a very long time. I’ve known her since she was little. She puts in the time and everything she gets is deserved. She works really, really hard.”

The Norwalk girls finished with an overall record of 6-16, but the future is bright as the entire varsity roster is set to return next season.
