With Monday’s 61-54 victory over MFL MarMac, the Pella Christian boys basketball team punched its ticket to tomorrow’s class 2A state tournament semifinals. Awaiting the Eagles is the number one seed, Central Lyon, who dispatched of Des Moines Christian 74-41.
The Lions are 22-1 this season and champions of the Siouxland conference. They’re the second highest scoring team in class 2A, averaging nearly 75 points per game with an average margin of victory of more than 29. They have three players who average more than 18 points per game and three starters who are 6’5″ or taller. Eagles coach J.D. Boer says that it’s a very talented opponent standing between his team and a trip to the championship game.
“Maybe some teams thought that maybe they don’t shoot that well, and then Tuesday night they shot lights out. Des Moines Christian tried to coax them into some shots and they went out and made ’em”, Boer said. “I think that you have to be really good that night to beat those guys, and certainly we have a locker room full of guys who plan on doing just that, being really good on Thursday morning. All we have to do is just try to be better Thursday morning.”
The Lions were the second best three-point shooting team in class 2A this season, making 38%, and they hit 10-of-23 for 43.5% in Tuesday night’s win over Des Moines Christian.
Tomorrow’s game between Central Lyon and Pella Christian will tip off at 10:30 at Wells Fargo Arena and you can hear all of the action live on 92.1 KRLS, beginning with pregame at 10:00.
