Six of eight sports were in action on a busy Monday for Knoxville Spring Sports Squads.
Knoxville Boys Beat Chariton, Girls Fall To Grandview Christian
It was a top ten match up in class 2A on the pitch at Randy Wilson Track as #5 Knoxville outlasted #9 Chariton 2-1 in double overtime with the Panthers winning in the penalty kick shootout 4-2. Kaison Wilder evened the match off an Ezra Schmidt assist with 3:21 left in the 2nd half after Chariton got the first goal just over a minute into the 2nd half. Neither team could score in the two overtime periods and Schmidt, Luka DeJong, Connor Willis, and Jenson Finnegan, who nailed the match winner, got goals in the penalty kick session. Knoxville is now 3-0. The girls took a trip to Des Moines and lost to Grandview Christian 6-2. Janae Baker and Hanna Linsley scored for the Panthers while Ava Van Donselaar assisted on both goals. Knoxville is now 1-3 on the season. Both Panther squads will head to Urbandale tonight to take on Des Moines Christian. The boys will actually play first at 6:00 with the girls to follow.
Knoxville Boys Golf Wins The Chariton Quad, Girls 2nd At Clarke
Both Knoxville Golf Squads were on the links on Monday with the class 3A #3 ranked boys winning a quad over fellow South Central Conference teams Albia, Davis County and Chariton. Knoxville shot a 151., which was 13 shots better than runner-up Albia. Davis County had a 178 and Chariton shot a 180. Individually, Carson Uitermarkt was medalist with an (E) 36 while Evan Smith carded a (+1) 37. Beau Leisure and Twin Cedars Student Kail Arkema both shot a 39. The girls placed a close 2nd. Faith Roozeboom was medalist with a 44 while Braylee Mason shot a 59, Caelie Smith had a 62, Hayden Hudson shot a 67 and Hannah Burkhart had a 74 with Kasey Freeland a 78. The boys are off until next Tuesday at Des Moines Christian while the girls are back at it today at the Centerville Invitational, the Panthers first 18 hole meet of the season.
Knoxville Girls Fall To Grinnell, Boys Lose As Well
Both Knoxville Tennis Squads were playing at separate venues against separate teams, however similar results as the girls fell to Grinnell 8-1 on Monday at the Joel Tonda Tennis Courts with Janie Maasdam getting Knoxville’s only individual win 6/3, 6/1. The Panthers were competitive in most of the other singles matches, and Maasdam teamed with Kate Schneider at #1 doubles but fell 6/2 and 6/4 For Maasdam and Schneider as the most experienced Panthers on the team, they both have goals they want to attain this season.
Janie: “For the conference I’m going to be playing singles. I have a goal to win that. I’ve worked really hard in the offseason. In doubles I just want to win.”
Kate: “I love to win, but just to improve my own skills and see how I can grow for next season.”

Coach Kevin Wadle noted that several of his players showed progress. Both Panther squads are off until Thursday when the boys host Clarke and the girls travel to Osceola.
