A late change to a varsity doubleheader allowed the Pella and Pella Christian girls and boys soccer teams to clash back-to-back Monday. It was all Dutch in both matchups, as the #5 in 2A girls defeated the Eagles 5-0, and the #12 in 3A Pella boys knocked off #11 in 1A Pella Christian 6-0.

A powerful northwest wind did not necessarily dictate possession in either contest; Abby Warner scored twice in the face of strong gusts, and the Dutch boys scored four second-half goals into the teeth of the breeze. In the opener, the Dutch girls broke through that forecast to take the advantage, and scored three later goals to ice that contest. Warner finished with a hat trick, and Taylor Semini and Abby Heitbrink also scored. Pella outshot P.C. on goal by a 19-2 margin.

According to Eagles Girls Head Coach Mike Buchheit, this was the winningest girls showdown between the two, with a combined 16 victories in the matchup — matching their 2017 best. Buchheit says his Eagles team played their best defense of the season to date over a 40 minute stretch between the 2nd and 3rd Pella goal. The Dutch girls improve to 9-2 overall while the Eagles fall to 7-4-1.

The nightcap started with two quick scores from Logan Solomon before both defenses tightened and prevented strong attacks for the majority of the contest, Pella’s boys went on a second half flurry though, scoring four goals in the final 25 minutes. Solomon finished with four scores, and Austin Bone and Tyson Barnes each added a goal as well. The Dutch are now 6-5, the Eagles fall to 3-6 overall.

Pella heads to Oskaloosa for a varsity doubleheader today, while the Eagles girls head to Grinnell, while the boys host the Tigers this evening.

The doubleheader served as a celebration, as Iowa Rush was highlighted, and included a group photo with the teams and the current youth soccer players in the community.
