Work on the Downtown Indianola Square Reconstruction Project has been delayed one month due to a conflict with a Mid-American gas main/service line. City of Indianola Community and Economic Development Director Charlie Dissell tells KNIA News the initial schedule showed the south alley project being completed by the end of June, and it is now projected towards the end of July. Dissell said Mid-American is in the process of engineering work to relocate the lines, after which the physical work is completed the city contractor can begin to repair the alley and parking lot.

Dissell said he understands this is a hardship for business owners and commuters, but he encourages travelers to use the public parking available near the square.

“We have many public parking lots in and around the square for people have the ability to park in. We understand that not everybody has the ability to walk those distances at times, so we do encourage that anybody who is able to park in those parking lots to take advantage of it, and those who may not be able to walk further distances then have the ability to park on the street closer to the businesses.”

The delay is for the south alley only, and at this time the timeline for the north alley has not changed and is expected to be completed at the end of July. A schedule for work on the west alley has not been determined at this time.
