The Jefferson Highway Association is hosting a special event this afternoon, as the “Sociability Caravan” that travels through historic areas of the state will be traveling through Indianola. A special dedication of historic signage will take place in front of the former Hotel Warren at 113 E Salem, with Mayor Stephanie Erickson and Indianola Chamber President and CEO Amanda Zwanziger presenting.
The Jefferson Highway Association celebrates the idea of the USA needing a north/south highway in the 1900’s, of which Hwy 65/69 in Indianola is a part of. Indianola is the only location in Iowa, and one of few remaining in the nation, to faithfully recognize this historic highway with “Jefferson Way” naming the segment of Hwy 65/69 running through town.
Additional signage purchased by the Warren County Historic Preservation Commission will include recognition for three locations including Hotel Warren, as well as the Tourist Camp, located between Simpson’s Barker and Wallace Hall on Buxton St., and the Hastie Gas Station, six miles north of Indianola on the west side of Hwy 65/69.
