A steady offensive attack helped the PCM baseball team pick up a 10-4 Heart of Iowa Conference home win over Greene County Wednesday night, while the Mustangs softball team fell at home to the Rams 3-2.
In Prairie City, the Mustangs baseball team racked up 13 hits while scoring runs in five of the six innings in which they batted. PCM jumped in front early in the contest, scoring eight runs on nine hits to take a commanding 8-3 lead after three innings. The Mustangs added single insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings to improve to 9-8 overall and 8-2 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. Gavin Fenton and Kaleb DeVries reached base safely in all four of their plate appearances in the contest and combined to score five of PCM’s 10 runs. Zeb Padgett improved to 3-2 on the season, allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks in six innings of work on the bump. Shay Burns came on in relief in the seventh inning and recorded a strikeout to give the Mustangs the win.
One night after escaping with a one-run road win, the PCM softball team found themselves on the wrong end of the narrow home loss. Greene County scored a run in the first inning, and that 1-0 lead held until the fifth. The Rams added two runs in the top of fifth and despite responding with two runs in the bottom of the frame, the Mustangs fell to 8-5 on the season and 6-4 in the conference.
The PCM baseball team is back in action tonight with a 7:30 p.m. non-conference road game at Albia, while the softball team has this evening off. Both the Mustangs summer sports teams then wrap up the week with non-conference games Friday. The PCM softball team hosts Pleasantville Friday night, while the baseball team hosts Bondurant-Farrar.
