The PCM softball team used a late inning surge to down Roland-Story 10-3 Monday night, while the Mustangs baseball team dropped an extra inning against the Norsemen 2-1.
PCM and Roland-Story matched each other stride for stride throughout most of the softball contest, going scoreless through four innings before scoring a run a piece in the fifth. The Mustangs took complete control of the game in the top of the sixth, plating nine runs in frame to improve to 13-8 overall and 9-4 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. Addison Steenhoek hit a three-run home in the sixth inning while going 2-for-4 on the night, and RaeAnn Duinink added a 2-for-2 performance with two RBIs. Rylee Parsons struck out five and gave up just three runs to nab the complete game win in the circle.
After Roland-Story grabbed a run in the bottom of the first and PCM answered with a run in the top of the second, offense was hard to come by the rest of the night. The Mustangs and Norsemen went scoreless from the bottom of the second through the eighth inning, before Roland-Story finally broke through for the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Nick Farver and Trigg Steenhoek combined to record all three hits on the night for PCM, with Steenhoek posting the lone RBI. Trenner VanDyke took a no-decision in the loss, throwing seven innings of three-hit baseball as the Mustangs fell to 12-12 overall and 8-4 in the league. Zeb Padgett suffered the loss in an inning of relief, allowing a run on two hits.
Both the PCM summer sports teams return home tonight for 7:30 p.m. non-conference games. The Mustangs softball team hosts Knoxville in a game that can be heard live on 95.3 KNIA with Derek Cardwell on the call, while the baseball team hosts Atlantic.
