In a matchup of Class 4A top 10 softball teams, fifth-ranked Norwalk lost a 1-0 decision in nine innings Tuesday night at ninth-ranked Winterset. The Huskies won in walk-off fashion, scoring the game’s only run on a bang-bang play at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Winterset improved to 21-11 on the season while the Warriors dropped to 22-7.

Norwalk had a tough night offensively, striking out 11 times and managing just four hits. Nyah Hulbert doubled and Jaylynn Brandt, Maddie Gullion and Zadie Wadle added singles. Olivia Dougherty pitched eight scoreless innings for the Warriors, allowing three hits and striking out 11. Wadle took the loss, allowing two hits and an unearned run in the ninth with two Ks.

Winterset’s winning rally started with a one-out error and a single and ended with an RBI single to left field. Hulbert’s throw to the plate was nearly in time to extend the game, but the runner was ruled safe.

The Norwalk summer sports squads will both play varsity doubleheaders at Pella Christian today at 5:30 p.m. Game two of the softball twin bill can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS. Game two in baseball will be streamed on kniakrls.com (KNIA3).
