While many associate summer with heat and humidity, the month of June in 2023 was a host to some unique extremes. State Climatologist Justin Glisan says historic wildfires in Canada pumped smoke into the upper Midwest, causing cooler than average, but extremely dry conditions as well. This lead to rapidly intensifying drought across most of the state, although there has been plenty of recent relief, as well, with last week’s rain impacing many of the hardest hit areas. Glisan says a derecho — while not as intense as the 2020 event, also impacted southern Iowa. Hear more from Glisan on today’s Let’s Talk Pella.
