Governor Kim Reynolds announced a special session for lawmakers to consider restrictions to abortion after a split decision by the Iowa Supreme Court left a 20-week ban in place. The 3-3 ruling ultimately dismissed a six-week bill passed by lawmakers in 2018.
District 37 State Representative Barb Kniff McCulla and District 19 State Senator Ken Rozenboom both support the move by Reynolds to convene lawmakers beginning July 11th — which they say is a result of the court ruling.
“We want to protect life, support new mothers, and promote strong family in Iowa,” Kniff McCulla said in a statement to KNIA/KRLS. “Iowans have spoken and elected representatives to uphold what they voted us in to do.”
“I’m delighted that the governor called us back to deal with the court’s failure to respect the Iowa Legislative,” Rozenboom wrote to KNIA/KRLS.
As of Wednesday evening, no bills have been submitted in either chamber, and it is unclear what may ultimately pass despite Republicans holding strong majorities in both the Iowa House and Senate.
