The Pella Christian baseball team will try for their first State Tournament berth in nearly 30 years tonight, as they take on four-time defending State Champion Van Meter in the Class 2A Substate 6 final.
The Eagles reached the Sweet 16 by downing Centerville in the quarterfinals 8-2 and then dominating Central Decatur 16-1 in the semifinals. The Bulldogs have cruised through postseason action to this point, downing Chariton 12-2 in the quarterfinals, before blasting West Central Valley 19-1 in the semifinals.
Tonight’s matchup features one of 2A’s most explosive offenses this season against one of the more overpowering pitching staffs in the class. Pella Christian’s pitching ranks second among 2A teams in strikeouts with 279, while Van Meter’s offense is second in RBIs with 217 and third in home runs with 11.
The Class 2A Substate 6 final between Pella Christian and Van Meter at Ankeny High School tonight can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS, with Tyler Crabb and Wynne Veenstra on the call. Pregame Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m., with first pitch to follow at 7 p.m.
