The Iowa DNR is offering two hunter safety courses in Knoxville later this month.
The classroom courses will take place on Thursday, August 17th from 6:00-9:00 pm and Saturday, August 19th from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Marion County Sportsman Club.
Hunter education is a mandatory program that is designed to introduce students to several life-long skills that are important to many different types of outdoor recreational opportunities. The course teaches students basic survival and first aid skills, water safety, wildlife identification, the basics of wildlife management, hunting laws and firearm/archery safety.
Iowa DNR Officer Eric Hoffman says it’s especially important for new hunters to take this class.
“If you’ve never had experience around a firearm or shooting a shotgun before there will be that opportunity to do that then at the class. That’s available for anybody that’s over the age of 12. That is a requirement before you purchase a hunting license in Iowa.”
