Central Women’s Soccer Team Gets Another Road Win
Moving further up the American Rivers Conference standings, the Central College women’s soccer team snagged a 2-1 road win at Nebraska Wesleyan University Saturday.
The Dutch (9-3-4, 4-2-1 conference) are up to 13 points and in a tie for third place. Zoey Sizemore got the win in goal while making one save, but she also garnered her first assist of the season. Her long punt bounced high off the turf, over the Prairie Wolves and to the foot of a charging Paige Cahill, who buried the opening goal in the 28th minute. Cahill found Grace Coates in the 58th minute for a goal to make it 2-0. Nebraska Wesleyan’s defense challenged the Dutch, as the Prairie Wolves were credited with 56% of possession on the day.
Central closes out the regular season on Tuesday at noon against Loras College in a home match at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex. A win or draw would assure the Dutch a spot in the league’s top half.
Dutch Dealt Tough Defeat in Men’s Soccer
Needing a positive result to secure a spot in the American Rivers Conference postseason tournament, the Central College men’s soccer team was defeated 1-0 at Nebraska Wesleyan University Saturday.
Central falls to 7-7-2 overall and 3-4-0 in the American Rivers Conference. Nebraska Wesleyan improved to 9-3-4 overall and 3-3-2 in league matches. The victory puts Nebraska Wesleyan in sixth place and two points above Central in the table. Both teams put five shots on goal but only the Prairie Wolves were able to find the back of the net, notching the lone score in the 30th minute. Carter Newhouse and Coleman Manuel. each had two shots on goal for Central. Goalkeeper Ronan Murphy got the start due to a John Foster injury, making four saves.
The Dutch wrap up the regular season at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in a home match at A.N. Kuyper Athletics Soccer Complex against Loras College. The Dutch will need to win that game to finish sixth and reach the postseason tournament.
Dutch Splits Home Volleyball Triangular
The Central College volleyball team opened with a strong sweep against Beloit College (Wis.) before suffering a straight-sets loss of its own to the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse in the second match.
Central (19-7) needed less than an hour to take down Beloit (1-19) 25-15, 25-5, 25-11. Wisconsin – La Crosse swept the Dutch 25-17, 25-11, 25-16. In the win against the Buccaneers, Gracie Daniels had a team-high nine kills while fellow senior Elyse Johnson was in on five blocks to go with five kills of her own. Daniels and Johnson, the only two seniors on the roster, were honored in a Senior Night ceremony before the Wisconsin – La Crosse game. Johnson had seven kills in the second match. Makayla Ribble led Central with 22 assists in the first contest while Landry Pacha had a team-high 15 in the second match. Libero Colleen Kenney had 20 digs between the two matches.
Two big matches await the Dutch next weekend in American Rivers Conference play. Central travels to Waverly for a 6 p.m. match with Wartburg College on Friday. Then the Dutch will head to Cedar Rapids on Saturday for an 11 a.m. match with Coe College.
