The Pella School Board has started a process to reduce the general fund budget in the coming fiscal year. At this week’s meeting, the board received a series of details related to the current financial situation, including projections in the coming years and a timeline for making cuts. Superintendent Greg Ebeling says in total, the district is running a $1 million deficit, which he attributes to a decline in enrollment that he believes is tied to education savings accounts, as well as state aid failing to keep up with annual cost increases in salaries and other expenditures. There are several meetings scheduled dealing with what to ultimately reduce, and the goal for Ebeling is to maintain as many staff as possible.
