There will be a new rule concerning fouls when the high school basketball season starts this week. No longer will teams have a one-and-bonus shot as the National Federation of State Associations has adopted the foul rule currently used in women’s college basketball. When a team reaches five fouls in each quarter, there will be two shots for the reminder of the quarter. Fouls will then reset to zero at the end of each quarter. Knoxville Girls Basketball Coach Matt Ritchhart tells KNIA/KRLS Sports fans may see most teams want to drive to the basket to get to the free throw line, something he wants his team to do a lot of this season.
Ritchhart: “You have to play defense without fouling. I’m going to concentrate on three pointers, and lay ups. I like the midrange game, but we need to start getting to the foul line.”
Last season the Panthers were able to get to the line 376 times which was an average of a little more than 16 free throw chances per game. Knoxville will begin its regular season on Tuesday against PCM.
