A stifling defensive attack by the PCM girls basketball team Thursday night propelled them to a 52-35 victory over Pella Christian that was heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The two teams combined to connect on just two of 26 shot attempts in the first quarter, as the Mustangs claimed a 6-0 lead at the end of the period. Both teams started to find their stride in the second quarter, as PCM edged the Eagles 22-16 to claim a 28-16 lead at halftime. Both teams added 15 points to their total in the third quarter, giving the Mustangs a 43-31 advantage heading into the final period. PCM improved to 2-1 on the season, finishing off the win by outscoring Pella Christian 9-4 in the fourth quarter, and dropped the Eagles to 1-3. Addison Steenhoek posted a game-high 20 points for PCM, while Rebecca DeVries added 14. Faith Kacmarynski led Pella Christian offensively with 14 points. Facing a full-court press against the Eagles, Mustangs head coach Sami Allison-Rodriguez said that she was happy with the jump her girls made offensively.

“I told the girls, I said they are going to be athletes. They’re going to be all over the place. They’re going to play aggressive and you have to handle it, and I feel like they did a really good job. Of course when I get on film, there’s going to be stuff that we can improve on, but I thought overall, the jump from our Knoxville turnovers to tonight felt a lot better.”

The Pella Christian girls are back in action tonight for a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader at Oskaloosa. Coverage of Eagles doubleheader can be heard live on the KRLS2 stream at KNIAKRLS.com at 6 pm. PCM also returns to action tonight for a Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader against Greene County at 6 pm.
