A combined four points made the difference between a sweep and being swept for the Central College basketball teams Saturday afternoon, as both the women’s and men’s teams fell to Coe College in a pair of games heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
A dramatic 3-pointer by guard Samantha Scott gave the Central College women’s basketball team a chance before dropping a 65-63 decision to Coe College in the waning seconds Saturday. Trailing 63-60 with just 14 seconds left, Scott took a pass from forward Kaitlyn Mumm on the wing and knocked down the game-tying shot, her only bucket of the day. But the Dutch were whistled for a foul with two seconds remaining and Coe, who had missed four consecutive free throws in the previous 22 seconds, knocked down both free throws for the win. Center Allison Van Gorp posted her third double-double of the season and 12th of her career with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Guard Abby Johnson also had 15 points, hitting 5-of-9 3-pointers.
The Central men’s team found itself battling to the final buzzer, but when it sounded, an improbable tip from Coe on a lob play gave the Kohawks the 85-83 overtime victory. The Dutch struggled down the stretch as a 71-63 lead with 1:32 remaining in regulation melted away. Trailing 83-81 in overtime, Joshua Van Gorp buried a pair of free throws to re-tie the game with 26 seconds remaining. The Dutch forced a jump ball with just 1 second left, but the alternate possession went to the Kohawks and set up the game-winning lob. Van Gorp nearly recorded a double-double with 27 points and nine rebounds, while Grant Johnson just missed a triple-double with 10 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists.
The Dutch women fell to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference and are off until December 19th and 20th, before closing out their pre-Christmas slate with a trip to Nashville, Tennessee. The Central men fell to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the league and next travel to the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) on Saturday for a 3 p.m game.
