The Norwalk bowlers swept a coed dual meet against Pella on Saturday while the boys basketball squad lost by 10 to West Des Moines Valley.
The Warrior bowling teams squared off with Pella at Cardinal Lanes in Newton. The Norwalk boys won by 139 total pins (2740-2601) and the girls prevailed by just 43 pins, 2129 to 2086.
Tanner Housley led the Warrior boys with a two-game series of 437, rolling a 213 and a 224. He later caught fire in the Baker games, hitting nine strikes in a row and striking out the 10th frame in three out of five games. Gavin Housley scored a 364 series and Brytan Bassman added a 361.
Julia Palen led the Norwalk girls with a 332 series, followed by Ellery Racz with a 281 and Anna Curran’s 264. Curran converted a spare or strike on 90 percent of her opportunities during the Baker games.
Both Norwalk bowling teams improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Their next meet is January 6th vs. Bondurant-Farrar at Air Lanes Bowling Center in Des Moines.
BASKETBALL
In a rematch from last year’s Class 4A Boys State Basketball Tournament, Norwalk lost to the defending champion Valley Tigers 51-41 on Saturday afternoon in Norwalk. The Warriors fought hard but gave up too many offensive rebounds, according to coach Aaron Pelzer. They were outrebounded 45-18, shot 31 percent from the field and attempted only three free throws.
Valley, now 5-1, led 24-17 at halftime and opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run. The Tigers never allowed the Warriors to pull closer than six points in the final stanza. Curtis Stinson paced Valley with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Kiki Deng scored 13 points and Trevin Jirak had 11 points and 11 boards.
Norwalk, now 5-2 overall, was led by Tim Koerselman’s three 3-pointers and 11 points. Aidan Harder tallied 10 points and three steals and Redek Born scored nine. The Warriors’ next game is Tuesday night at home vs. Des Moines Lincoln.
