The Knoxville Police Department wants to remind citizens to clear sidewalks of all snow and ice when  winter weather events take place.

Doing this prevents a fall for yourself, postal workers, children walking to and from school, and anyone else using public walkways. City code states that sidewalks need to be cleaned within 24 hours after snow/ice has stopped falling. If the snow isn’t removed the city will do so and a bill for the work is sent to the property owner. It is also encouraged to keep elderly and disabled neighbors in mind who can’t push snow. Knoxville Police Department Community Service Officer Meredith Clark says it’s important to keep the sidewalks safe for everyone.

“Obviously a lot of people still do utilize our sidewalks in the winter, especially kids walking to and from school, people going to the grocery store, postal workers especially. We do want to make sure those are safe and cleaned off for everybody.”
