The year 2023 was above average in terms of temperature and below normal for precipitation.
According to the National Weather Service, the average daily temperature was 53.8 degrees, 2.8 above normal. Central Iowa received just under 25 inches of precipitation last year, which is 11 1/2 inches below the typical year. Most of south central Iowa is considered to be in extreme drought conditions. Snowfall remains about eight inches behind the usual pace for the winter season.
The Climate Prediction Center indicates the start to 2024 should have near normal temperatures and the chance for above average precipitation, which may start with a winter weather system early next week.
