The Indianola boys and girls basketball teams fell to the Mustangs of Dallas Center-Grimes in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader Friday evening, the girls falling 63-30 and the boys 65-51.
The Indians girls got off to a 6-0 start with high energy, but DCG slowly got back into the contest throughout the first quarter eventually hitting some outside shots to lead 17-11 after the first and 30-18 at the break. The Mustangs would take over in the third quarter as they outscored the Indians 16-2, and closed out the game. Head coach Jeff Janssen said after the game turnovers have plagued the Indians this season, but he was happy with their half court defense and the intensity Indianola played with all game long. Brooke White led the team with nine points.
The Indians boys led after the first quarter 13-11, but were unable to sustain the offensive output and trailed 30-23 at the break. Like in the girls contest, the Mustangs ramped up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and the Indians were unable to take advantage of the aggressive plays where turnovers allowed DCG to build a 20-plus point lead going into the fourth. George Blake led the Indians with 15 points off the bench.
The girls are now 2-8 and 2-2 in conference play, while the boys are 0-6 and 0-4, and both teams have a quick turnaround as they have a doubleheader against Johnston beginning at noon.
