The Pella Public Library is holding two events this month.
On Tuesday, the library invites the community to create their own lantern, which can be used as a night light or as mood lighting while watching a movie or TV. The process will start by using old card catalog cards, and then use markers, watercolors, or color pencils; nails, pins or screwdrivers; to transform the cards that were used to find books in the library before computers, into a lantern. Basic instructions for simple construction using four cards are included, but extra cards are provided so participants can experiment and use their imaginations to make more complicated structures. The activity is most appropriate for those 14 and older, but can be done by children with adult participation.
The library is also holding an open house for their Die Cut Machine on Monday, January 29th. The use of a Die Cut Machine has been available to the public for several years, and the library recently added twenty new dies. The event, which will be held from 4-6 pm, allows the community to learn how to use the die cut machine and see what dies are available. Paper will be available for practice, or participants can bring their own if they want multiple copies of cutouts. A die cut machine cuts complex shapes out of paper and other materials with a single pull of a lever. Included in the twenty new dies are many templates for cards, and for boxes which would make fun party favors.
Both programs are free and open to all ages. For more information, contact the library at 641-628-4268.
