The Simpson men’s basketball team picked up a crucial American Rivers Conference victory over Wartburg in overtime Saturday afternoon 106-98, while the Storm women struggled offensively as they fell to #10 Wartburg 72-46
The Storm men were playing well in the first half, moving the ball well and shooting over 50% from the field and from three-point range to go ahead 49-38 at the break. The second half saw Simpson stave off multiple Wartburg runs and stayed ahead for the majority of the contest until late, when the Knights when on a 10-0 run to take a six-point lead with just 2:21 remaining. An and-one bucket from Jack Hutchinson and clutch buckets from Andrew Curran would tie the score and force the extra period. Simpson was extra clutch at the free-throw line in the extra period, going 10-10 and earning a much needed victory.
Hutchinson scored a career-high 31 points in the contest.
The Storm women had a first quarter lead against the Knights going into the first break up 20-18, but there the good fortune would come to a stop. The Knights outscored Simpson 27-8 in the second quarter, then followed that up after halftime outscoring the Storm 16-2 in the third quarter to take full control. Foul trouble plagued the Storm throughout the contest, as Haley Rasmussen led the team with 11 points.
The men are now 8-11 overall and 2-8 in conference play and just two games back of the sixth seed in the conference tournament, while the women are 11-8 and 6-4. They both next play on Wednesday at Coe.
