Dallas Center-Grimes picked up a pair of lopsided victories over the Pella Christian basketball teams last night in Grimes, winning the girls game 57-35 and the boys contest 69-48 in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Little Hawkeye Conference champion Mustang girls never trailed, but the Eagles were much more competitive than in a 31-point loss on January 22nd. It was just 16-11 DCG after the first quarter and 29-17 at halftime. While the Mustangs kept slowly pulling away, P.C. coach Brendan Foughty was happy with the way his team kept fighting.

“This is a team that took care of business with us the first time around and that wasn’t true this time. They had to fight, and while it was tough for us with the slim rotation that we had, I’m incredibly proud with the toughness and grit that some of our kids had to show tonight to keep battling and fighting when really they had no legs left.”

Maggie Heinen was the only player in double figures for either team, as she knocked down three first half three-pointers on her way to 11 points. Rachel Kacmarynski added nine points and ten rebounds as the Eagles fall to 8-12 overall and 3-8 in the LHC.

In the boys game, P.C. got off to a slow start, falling behind 13-6 after one quarter, then charged back to take what would end up as their only lead of the game at 18-17. A 10-0 run put DCG back in control and they enjoyed a 34-27 advantage at intermission.

It only got worse from there as the Mustangs outscored the Eagles 21-9 in the third quarter and coasted home with the win. While DCG had four players in double figures, Dane Geetings was Pella Christian’s high man with 11, all in the first half. The Eagles saw their six-game winning streak snapped as they fall to 15-5 and 7-4 in conference action.

Up next for both P.C. teams is the final doubleheader of the regular season, tomorrow night at Indianola.
