The PCM girls basketball team defeated Nevada in overtime Tuesday night as the boys fell in the final second in a Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader senior night edition heard live on the KRLS3 stream.

The Mustang girls found themselves up 35-28 going into the fourth quarter of their contest Tuesday. After outscoring the PCM girls 11-4 in the fourth quarter the Cubs were able to send the game into overtime after a buzzer beater three pointer by Emilee Kelly. In overtime it was all Mustangs out scoring Nevada 12-1 in the extra period to secure the win 51-40. The win closes out the regular season for the Mustang girls as they finish with a 14-6 overall record and a 10-4 mark in the conference. The PCM girls were led in scoring in the contest by sophomore Tori Lindsay who had 23 points. PCM girls basketball coach Sami Allison-Rodriguez is excited for her team to have a home game to start the postseason.

“We just are just loving playing with each other and we don’t want to be done. We know in order to do that we need to just keep getting better. Our first three quarters I was really proud of our defense, the fourth quarter we gave up 14 to a team we wanted to keep at eight per quarter. We kind of fell apart a bit and maybe that was on me for subs and not getting fresh legs in there. We found a way. We are super excited to have another home game. These home crowds on Friday nights and tonight have just been awesome for the boys and girls. Hopefully everyone can pack the gym on Saturday at 7:00 against Grinnell.”

The Mustang boys trailed 59-49 at the end of the third quarter and brought the game all the way back to tie it at 63-63 late in the fourth quarter. A shooting foul was called on PCM with 0.9 second on the clock to send the Cubs to the free throw line to put the game away and get the win 65-63 over the Mustangs. The loss drops the Mustangs to 9-11 overall on the season and 6-8 in the conference. PCM was led in scoring on the night by junior Gavin Van Gorp who had 21 points. Despite the loss, PCM boys coach Tony Ford talked about what this senior class has meant to him as first year head coach as they were honored for senior night.

“When I became the coach I wanted three things for my team to represent and it was hard work, hustle, and being unselfish. I couldn’t imagine a better group to start that tradition with and to set those core covenants with. I can’t say enough about them so I’m not going to start but I am just very thankful they’re here and they’re my first senior group.”

The PCM girls will be back in action Saturday night when they host Grinnell in their first regional game, and the PCM boys will next compete Thursday when they travel to Eddyville for their regular season finale.
