A pair of Dallas Center-Grimes basketball teams finished their conference championship journeys with a sweep of Pella to finish the league rotation in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS Friday.
The Dutch boys couldn’t handle an offensive flurry against the Mustangs in a 75-62 loss, while the #13 in 4A Pella girls couldn’t overcome a slow start against #4 DCG 47-38 in a potential upcoming regional final showdown.
The opener featured a 10-2 hole for the home team against the eventual back-to-back undefeated league champions. While Pella pulled the contest to within one to start the third quarter, the defending state title winners flexed their muscle to find the win.
“We started off slow in the first quarter and dug ourselves in a hole,” said Head Coach Blaine Forsythe. “I like the fight from our team to claw back in the second and third quarters. We gave ourselves a chance in the 2nd half and just came up short. DCG is a well-coached team that made it difficult on us offensively.”
Abby Warner continued her late season scoring surge with a 14-point performance.
The night cap featured a white-hot DCG team exploding with a 28-point first quarter and a double-digit advantage built in the first eight minutes. Pella would pull the game to as close as four points in the second half, but the relentless Mustangs offense was too hard to overcome, especially as they only gave up three turnovers.
Jack McGuire got back on track with a 19-point, eight-rebound performance.
Pella’s girls finish the regular season at 15-6 and in 3rd place in the Little Hawkeye Conference; the boys drop to 11-8 and 4th in the league standings at 6-6. The Dutch girls await the winner of Ballard-Newton on Saturday, February 17th (92.1 KRLS/Pella Dutch Live) in the 4A regional semifinals; the Dutch boys welcome #3 in 3A Waverly-Shell Rock for a non-conference regular season contest on Monday (92.1 KRLS/Pella Dutch Live).
