At their respective track meets Thursday night, Pella Christian’s Trevor Veenstra and Rachel Kacmarynski qualified for the 2024 Drake Relays.
Veenstra, who competed at the Ballard Invitational, recorded a discus throw of 180′ 4″, which surpassed the Drake Relays Blue Standard of 170 feet. In addition to qualifying for the Relays, the senior won the meet by over 56 feet. Prior to Thursday’s meet, Veenstra had already qualified for the Drake Relays in the shot put. At the Iowa Track Coaches Association Indoor Championships on Thursday, March 7th, recorded a throw of 57’2.5” to win the event and his distance surpassed the Blue Standard of 55’ 6”.
Competing in her first high school track and field meet at Clarke’s Dewitt Invite, Kacmarynski broke the school record in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.45 seconds. That mark bested the previous school record of 12.52 seconds set by Jasmin Schelhaas in 2012 and also met the Drake Relays Blue Standard. In addition to her 100 meter dash success, Kacmarynski also won the long jump (16”11.25”) and was a part of the winning sprint medley relay and the 4×400 meter relay teams.
The Pella Christian track and field teams return to action on Tuesday, with both squads competing at the Davis County meet.
