Six Norwalk spring sports teams competed on Thursday, highlighted by a first-place finish in girls golf and wins in girls tennis and girls and boys soccer. The boys tennis dual meet at Newton was rescheduled for today due to cold and wet conditions.
Norwalk wins Oskaloosa Girls Golf Invite
Freshman Evelyn Kinney’s medalist round of 83 helped Norwalk win the team championship of Thursday’s Oskaloosa Girls Golf Invitational. The Warriors posted a winning score of 358 at Edmundson Golf Course, finishing 25 strokes ahead of second-place Pella on a cool and damp afternoon. Ava Garvey backed up Kinney’s 83 with an 89 to tie for fifth place. Norwalk also counted Mariola Torro Abad’s 90 and Addie Smith’s 96. The Warriors’ next meet is the Turk Bowman Invitational on Monday at Veenker Memorial in Ames.
Girls Tennis: Norwalk 8, Newton 3
The Norwalk girls tennis team improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference with an 8-3 home win over Newton. The Warriors went 5-1 in singles play and also won the top three doubles matches. Anya Kallenbach, Tessa Livingston and Sutton McNelly all won third-set super tiebreakers in singles play, as did the doubles team of McNelly and Julia Palen. Winning in straight sets were Katie Larson and Palen in singles play and the doubles teams of Kallenbach and Larson and Grace Dehmer and Livingston. Norwalk will play at Urbandale on Monday.

Girls Soccer: Norwalk 3, Ames 0
The Norwalk girls soccer team pushed back over the .500 mark on Thursday night with a 3-0 shutout at Ames. Braelyn Clark scored off a free kick for the 4-3 Warriors, Avery Drymon connected on a long goal, and Addison Burch added a penalty kick and one assist. The Class 2A fifth-ranked Warriors host Newton tonight at 7:00.
Boys Soccer: Norwalk 2, Ankeny Centennial 0
Grant Fletcher and Eli Scavo both scored first-half goals as Norwalk defeated Ankeny Centennial 2-0 in boys soccer. Caden Endres had an assist for the Warriors and goalie Jacoby Robbins made six saves in his fourth shutout of the season. Norwalk converted two of their four shots on goal, improving to 5-5 overall. The Warriors return to action Monday night, facing Des Moines Lincoln at the Cownie Soccer Park.
Boys Track: Norwalk ties for 3rd at Waukee
The Norwalk boys track team scored 109 points and tied for third place in Class A of the Waukee Relays. The Warriors won a pair of relays, clocking a Drake Relays Blue Standard time of 7:59.45 in the 4×800 and a season-best of 3:27.54 in the 4×400. The 4×800 quartet featured Henry Groos, AJ Mosqueda, Grant Wallace and Tony Anania. The 4×400 team was Xavier Bush, Daniel Roche’ Cam Thomas and Anania.
Norwalk placed second in the sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays and third in the 4×100. Kaiden Kunze and Harrison Tripp had the team’s top individual finishes, placing second in the long jump and discus, respectively. Placing third for the Warriors were Isaac Sutcliffe in the long jump, Sam Parker in the 3,200 and Nate Platner in the 100 dash. Norwalk’s next meet is Tuesday night at Carlisle.
Norwalk girls track competes at Indianola
The Norwalk girls track team placed second in three relays at Thursday’s Ron Werling Relays at Indianola. The Warriors’ team finish was not announced. Norwalk’s second-place relay teams included Ella Johnson, Kaia Stoulil, Leah Crick and Jillian Hammond in the shuttle hurdle, Hailey Gear, Nyah Hulbert, Ashlyn Brown and Ava Carlson in the distance medley and Gear, Savannah Welch, Jaylynn Brandt and Hulbert in the 4×100. Hammond tied for third in the high jump, clearing four feet, six inches. The Warriors will compete at Winterset on Monday.
