The rich tradition of track and field remains alive and well in south central Iowa, and many KNIA/KRLS area athletes enjoyed a sensational weekend at the 114th Drake Relays Invitational.

Saturday was highlighted locally by Norwalk’s Tony Anania, who already had two successful individual appearances heading into the rain-delayed 1600 meters. Anania won the race with a time of 4:06.54 to break the Relays’ record of 4:10.76 that Linn-Mar’s Josh Evans set in 2014. Anania’s performance lifted him to No. 4 on the state’s all-time list.

Pella’s Marissa Ferebee capped a special weekend in the evening, blazing to breaking her own school-best mark and finishing 3rd in the 1500 meters at 4:31.72. She was on the anchor of the 4×800 relay earlier in the day that included Macy Schroeder, Lizzie Neumann, and Raegan Snieder and placed 11th, also knocking their own school record down as well (9:32.03).

Pella Christian showed why they are not just a contender, but maybe the team to beat in the postseason in Class 2A, highlighted by their 4×400 relay of Rachel Kacmarynski, Meredith Van Wyk, Maisy Meinders, and Bailey Vos, who shattered the previous school record of 4:01.50 held since 1979. They placed 3rd with a time of 3:53.87.

This capped a weekend where KNIA/KRLS area schools (Pella, Knoxville, Pella Christian, Indianola, Norwalk, and PCM) combined to place 19 events in the top eight or better of 37 total entries.
