Central Offense Explodes in Baseball Win Over Wartburg

A 10-run fourth inning propelled the Central College baseball team to a 15-10 win over Wartburg College Monday afternoon. The two teams also played the final three frames of Saturday’s suspended game that Wartburg held on to win 4-0, giving the Knights two wins in the three-game series.

The Dutch (14-22, 8-13 conference) had scored just one run in the first two games against the Knights but broke out in game three. Central scored 14 runs with two outs, including 10 in a massive fourth inning. All nine Central starters had at least one hit, including five with multiple hits. The Dutch also took advantage of eight walks, four hit batsmen and four errors. Ten of Central’s 15 runs were unearned.

Hitting in the first two spots of the lineup, Logan McCoy and Colton DeRocher had two hits and three RBIs for the Dutch. Dom DeLaPaz had just one hit, but it was a two-run blast in the fourth. Brayden Sawyer led the team with three hits. Starting pitcher Chance Dreyer struck out 11 while issuing one walk and scattering 10 hits as the Knights scored five earned runs on him in six innings of work. Three Central pitchers combined to close out the final three innings. Bryce Haessig tossed the final two, giving up a pair of earned runs on four hits and no walks.

Central has three games left on the regular season schedule, starting with a 3:30 pm doubleheader at Loras College on Friday.

Central’s Moffett in First at Men’s Conference Golf Championships

Another solid round from Jacob Moffett Monday has the Central College’s men’s golfer leading the field at the American Rivers Conference Championships through 36 holes.

Playing on the Par-71 course at Glen Oaks Country Club, Moffett is in sole possession of first place with a two-day score of 72-74-146. He’s two strokes clear of Nebraska Wesleyan University’s Harrison Weddell in second place at 73-75-148.

As a team, Central tallied a 320 on Monday and slipped to fourth place (306-320-626). The rest of Central’s lineup all carded scores of at least 80 on a breezy day in Central Iowa. Harold Dobernecker had Central’s next best round and is tied for 15th at 78-81-159. Kayden Pendergrass shot an 82 and is tied for 17th (78-82-160). John Oltman and Cole McGriff both shot 83 Monday, putting Oltman in a tie for 22nd (78-83-161) and McGriff in a tie for 38th (85-83-168).

Central will tee off at 9:45 am today for the third and final round of the league championships.
