The Norwalk girls tennis team opened regional play with a victory on Friday while the Warrior soccer teams closed out the regular season with three impressive wins on the pitch.

Girls tennis tops SE Polk

In Class 2A Girls Regional Team Tennis, Norwalk defeated Southeast Polk 5-0 in first round play. Katie Larson, Grace Dehmer and Julia Palen all won easily in straight sets, while Sutton McNelly won her match 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Tessa Livingston had the toughest match of the day, prevailing in a third-set tiebreaker 6-4, 5-7, 10-8. Anya Kallenbach’s singles match was not finished when the dual win was clinched.

The Warriors improved to 6-5 on the season and advanced to the 2A Region 1 semifinal round. They will take on Ankeny Centennial on Tuesday morning at Waukee Northwest.

Girls Soccer extends winning streak

The Norwalk girls soccer team continued their streak of shutout victories on Friday, defeating Class 2A 11th-ranked Lewis Central 4-0, then knocking off 2A top-ranked and previously unbeaten Waverly-Shell Rock 2-0 in the Norwalk Triangular. The 2A third-ranked Warriors finished the regular season 13-4 overall and have now won eight straight games without allowing a goal.

Tatum Miller, Anna Larson, Braelyn Clark and Taylor Schreiber each scored a goal against LC and Pearl Brown had the only assist. Clark converted a penalty kick and Maya Butler also scored a goal in the win over Waverly. Katie Liedtke continues to serve as the primary goalie for the Warriors, who will not play again until hosting Creston or Winterset in a regional semifinal on May 21.

Boys Soccer wins 4-2

In a matchup of top 10-ranked boys soccer teams, Class 3A No. 6 Norwalk defeated 4A No. 8 Des Moines Roosevelt 4-2 at Mediacom Stadium. The Warriors led 3-1 at halftime and finished off their third straight victory to improve to 9-8 overall. Caden Endres, Noah Buhrow and Eli Scavo all scored Norwalk goals, assisted by Teegan Kralik, Jace Davis and Lukas Dingman, respectively. The fourth score was an own goal off Roosevelt. Seven different Warrior players attempted one shot on goal and keeper Jacoby Robbins tallied five saves.

Norwalk’s next game is a Class 3A, Substate 6 semifinal on Monday, May 20. They will host Waverly-Shell Rock or Waterloo East.
