Multiple rounds of severe weather over the last month has brought frequent warnings and needed drought relief across the region. State Climatologist Justin Glisan says the long-term warmer and wetter signals predicted late this winter have come to fruition, which often leads to more active thunderstorm development. Glisan says the current set up has favored the spawning of dozens of tornadoes statewide, and is reminiscent of some previous active years for severe weather. On the positive, Glisan says most of the state has seen significant reduction in drought condition, although some of the underground reservoir shortages could take years to refill, even as flooding has been reported in many locations in Iowa this spring at the surface.
