It’s been 44 years since a Pella Police Officer was shot and killed while on duty in Knoxville. The family of John E. Van Haaften continues to honor his memory and legacy, and that continued at a special ceremony hosted by the Pella Police Department this week as part of National Peace Officer Memorial Day, where Van Haaften’s wife Sheryl Hanthorn gave the keynote speech about his life and service. Hanthorn has also worked for several years with her family to continue remembering Van Haaften, which includes annual scholarships given to Pella and Pella Christian graduating seniors at both schools’ senior awards nights.
