The Knoxville Fire Department is reminding the community of bonfire safety as we head into the warmer months.

According to Knoxville Fire Chief Cal Wyman, city code states that recreational fires are allowed, but they need to be 25 feet from structure, be built with cut firewood or anything 5/8ths or bigger. You are not allowed to burn trash, and there needs to be an extinguishing source nearby. Wyman says that your fire should also be attended at all times.

“The big thing to remember is recreational fires are allowed. They must be contained in a fire pit. They must be contained at all times, and there needs to be an extinguishing source readily available.”

Wyman also says that recreational fires should not be held after excessive alcohol consumption.
