It was a rough day for both of Marion County’s boys golf squads at the class 3A State Meet at Veenker Memorial Course in Ames on Monday. Pella shot a 329 which was 7th out of nine teams, and Knoxville carded a team total of 331 which was in 8th place. For the Dutch Kyler Besick led the way with a round of 79 which was +7. Other scores were Patrick Bishara shooting an 83…Cole Flodan shot a 84, Luke Naig carded an 86 A.J. Hoekstra had an 88 and Cade McGinley had an 83. Coach Bob Fessler told KNIA/KRLS Sports it was a disappointing day for his team, but he was happy to see his players keep grinding.

Fessler: “We were a little high from some key players that usually do. We did get some good play from our 5 and 6 kids, so I was happy about that.”

Meanwhile, Knoxville was hoping for big things this year after winning the runner-up trophy last season. Coach Barry Smith told KNIA/KRLS Sports a few missed chances by everyone added up to a high score.

Smith: “Couple holes out there we didn’t play well, take those away and it’s a little different. Ironically we shot 329 last year and was in 2nd place and we shot 331 this year and we’re in 8th place.”

Evan Smith led the Panthers with a +3 75, which puts him in 6th place individually. Other Panther scores were Carson Uitermarkt with an 82, Noah Keefer had an 88, Brady Roozeboom shot an 87, Urban Ziller had an 89 and Luke Roozeboom shot a 97. Officials are changing up the format somewhat today as there is a threat for severe weather in the Ames area later this afternoon and all golfers will start with a shotgun start.
