After opening the game with a 6-0 lead, the Pella Christian baseball team held off Martensdale St. Mary’s for a 6-5 victory Monday night.

Grant Kelderman’s first inning single got the scoring started for the Eagles, as Tysen De Vries came around to score after leading off the inning with a single. A fielder’s choice a batter later scored Luke Fynaardt and gave Pella Christian a 2-0 lead. The Eagles added on in the bottom of the third, with De Vries, Caleb Van Arendonk, Trevor Veenstra, and Connor Van Zee scoring on RBIs provided by Van Arendonk, Kelderman, Van Zee, and Brecken Ritzert. Pella Christian’s 6-0 lead was short-lived, as the Blue Devils struck for five runs in the top of the fourth. The Eagles regained control following the Martensdale St. Mary’s rally, with both teams being held scoreless over their final three innings of at-bats. Kelderman picked up the win in his second start of the season, throwing three innings of perfect baseball with five strikeouts. Veenstra picked up the save in relief, recording the final two outs including a strikeout to end the game.

The Pella Christian baseball team improves to 2-1 overall on the season and will look to move to 3-1 on Wednesday in a 7 pm game at Pleasantville.
