Softball wins 2-1

The Norwalk softball team opened the season in walk-off fashion, defeating Ankeny 2-1 on Nyah Hulbert’s two-out, two-strike RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

Streamed live on kniakrls.com (KNIA3), the game was largely a pitchers duel between Norwalk’s Carly Brewer and Ankeny’s Abby Rusher. Brewer took a one-hit shutout into the seventh, but the Hawks were able to tie the score on Ava Tomlinson’s RBI single. The Warriors answered in the bottom of the seventh, getting a leadoff single from Addi Downe and a two-out walk from Grace Dehmer. Hulbert, who doubled and scored on Jaylynn Brandt’s single in the third inning, ended the game with a sharp base hit up the middle that drove in pinch-runner Reese Heim.

Brandt finished 2-for-2 with a walk and Dehmer rounded out the Warriors’ six-hit attack with a single. Brewer, who was making her Norwalk debut, struck out five in 6 ⅓ innings in the circle. Olivia Dougherty picked up the win in relief. Ranked second in Class 4A to start the season, the Warriors return to action Wednesday night at Southeast Polk.

The Norwalk baseball team earned their first win of the season in their home opener, defeating Carlisle 5-2. The Warriors trailed 2-0 after a half-inning, but scored two runs in the second, two in the third and one in the sixth. Norwalk, now 1-3 overall, will play at Gilbert on Friday night.
