Warren County Health Services wants to remind local residents to have a plan in place both before and after a power outage caused by severe weather. Residents should keep enough nonperishable food and water to last multiple days, and during the power outage to keep freezers and refrigerators closed. A refrigerator will keep food cold for approximately four hours, and a full freezer will keep temperature for approximately 48 hours, and to supplement with coolers and ice if available.

After power is restored, throw away any food that has been exposed to temperatures 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more, or that has an unusual odor, color or texture. If the power is out for more than a day, discard any medication that should be refrigerated, unless the drug’s label says otherwise, and consult your doctor or pharmacist immediately for a new supply.
