The Pella Christian baseball team won the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont tournament for the second straight season Saturday afternoon, defeating North Mahaska 10-0 in the opener and the hosts 16-6 in the championship game.
The Eagles, who won both games via the run-rule, wasted little time proving to be the cream of the crop in the tournament. Opening the day against the Warhawks, Pella Christian scored three runs in the bottom of the first, then scored two runs in each of the second through fourth innings to take a 9-0 lead. The Eagles secured their spot in the championship in the fifth, scoring their final run to set up the matchup with the tournament hosts. In the nightcap, Pella Christian opened the game with a three-run top of the first. The Rockets scored four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 lead, but the Eagles answered with five runs over the second and third innings to reclaim the lead. EBF added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Eagles pulled away with four runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the tournament title.
Against North Mahaska, Tysen De Vries and Caleb Van Arendonk led the Pella Christian offense, with both reaching base three times, while combining for four runs scored, two RBIs, and three stolen bases. Luke Fynaardt propelled the Eagles offense in the win over the Rockets, going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and three runs scored. Logan Gallaher threw four innings of one-hit baseball to record the win against the Warhawks, while striking out four. Brecken Ritzert was the winning pitcher in the championship game, striking out nine in a complete game effort.
The Pella Christian baseball team is back in action Monday, joining the softball team for Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheaders at Oskaloosa. Both the baseball and softball twinbills are slated to begin at 5:30 pm.
