The Norwalk baseball and softball teams both swept doubleheaders against Newton on Monday night. The Warrior baseball team won 1-0 and 3-1 while the softball team prevailed 11-0 in five innings and 12-0 in four.

Aidan Harder and Garrett Geurink highlighted the baseball sweep with a combined no-hitter in game one. Harder struck out five Cardinals in five innings – walking four – and Geurink retired all six batters he faced with two Ks. Payton Nichols scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the second, hitting a single and later scoring on a hit by Mason Vogel.

In the baseball night cap, CJ Davis led the offense with two singles, a double and two runs scored. Cole Wardlow doubled and drove in a run while Harder and Nichols added one RBI each. Wardlow pitched six solid innings for the win and Davis retired the side in order in the seventh to earn the save.

The Class 4A 2nd-ranked Norwalk softball team put together an eight-run second inning in game one and finished off Newton 11-0 in five. Jaylynn Brandt went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI and Maddie Gullion homered and drove in four. Carly Brewer and Addi Downe combined on a four-hitter with six strikeouts.

The Warriors won game two 12-0 in four innings. Nyah Hulbert batted 2-for-3 with a triple and scored three runs. Bailey Birmingham was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Brewer and Adeleine Fisher both doubled and drove in a pair. Olivia Dougherty pitched all four innings for the win, allowing two hits and striking out five.

The Norwalk softball team improved to 20-2 overall and 11-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. The baseball team is now 11-11 overall and 8-4 in the LHC. Both Warrior squads will host Indianola on Wednesday night.
