The Pella Christian baseball team posted a massive seventh inning comeback to pull off a 10-9 walk-off win in extra innings against Oskaloosa Wednesday night, while the Eagles softball team fell to the Indians 10-3.
After falling behind 9-2 in the opening six innings, the Pella Christian baseball team’s bats came alive when they needed them most. Down to their last three outs, the Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to tie the game at 9-9 and send it to extra innings. Oskaloosa loaded the bases with two outs in the top half of the eighth inning, but Pella Christian held them off the scoreboard and set up the chance for more late game heroics. Conor Van Zee’s hit by pitch in the home half of the eighth gave the Eagles their shot and courtesy runner Hudson Meixner moved into scoring position on Ethan Van Arendonk’s sacrifice bunt. Tysen DeVries then completed the comeback for Pella Christian, coming through with a two-out single to left field to score Meixner for the walk-off win. Trevor Veenstra led the Eagles offense in the victory, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored as the team improved to 11-15 overall and 2-10 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
On the softball diamond, Pella Christian fell behind 5-1 in the opening two innings and couldn’t erase the deficit. The Eagles plated single runs in the third and fifth innings to pull within 5-3, but a five-run seventh inning for the Indians dropped Pella Christian to 1-17 overall and 0-12 in conference play. Faith Kacmarynski, Claire Braafhart, and Brynn Roozeboom combined to record six of the team’s nine hits in the game, with Faith and Claire scoring the three runs for the Eagles. Batting in Pella Christian’s three runs were Braafhart, Maddy Van Zee, and Addie Van Arendonk.
The Pella Christian softball team is back in action tonight against PCM in a 7:15 pm non-conference game, while the baseball team is off until a conference doubleheader at Newton on Friday that begins at 5:30 pm.
