Due Friday morning’s rainfall and the forecast for more rain tonight, the City of Leighton has postponed their Independence Day festivities to Saturday night.

The decision to postpone the event by a day was made in coordination with Mahaska County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Josh Stevens. Activities will still begin at 5 pm Saturday, with food, games, a parade, adult softball, and more being held throughout the town and fireworks are scheduled to start at 10 pm. Julie Rooda with the Leighton Independence Day Celebration says that they are grateful for the donations they receive to make the event possible.

“What I think is so cool about this is that it’s a good ole small town event where there’s a lot of activities for people to do for free. So, we’ll have Smitty’s Inflatables, Vandenberg Caricature Drawings, we’ll have Case Face Painting, and Toby the Balloon Dude. And so, there’s a lot of different things, as well as some local displays that people have access to and all of that is brought to us by donations, and I just think that’s fantastic.”
