The Indianola summer sports teams will split up to begin the second to last week of regular season play Monday, with the baseball team hosting Des Moines Lincoln and the softball team traveling to Ottumwa.
The Indians baseball team is hoping to build on the momentum they captured by going 4-1 last week, which featured a 5-0 win over Class 4A #2 Dallas Center-Grimes. On the other side of the diamond, Indianola will face a Railsplitters’ team that struggled in going 6-16 in the month of June, including dropping all four games they played last week. Coming off of a big week, Indians head coach Nathan Carlin says that his message to the team entering Monday’s game was to not overlook any opponent.
“It doesn’t matter who we played yesterday, it doesn’t matter who we play tomorrow, the most important thing is that we go 1-0, we take care of business, we do our jobs, and we do the small stuff, and that’ll lead to a victory at the end of the night. It doesn’t matter if we win 1-0 or 10-0, in two weeks we just need to be ahead on the scoreboard after seven innings.”
In Ottumwa, the Indianola softball team is also looking to build off the momentum they gained last week, earning upset wins of Class 5A #4 Ankeny Centennial and #9 Des Moines Roosevelt on Friday. Much like the baseball team, the Indians softball team will do so against a struggling Bulldogs squad that enters the contest at 8-19 overall.
Coverage of the Indianola baseball game against Des Moines Lincoln Monday can be heard live on 94.3 KNIA beginning at 6:45 pm, while first pitch of the Indians softball game at Ottumwa is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
