Less than a week after becoming a two-time Academic All-American, Spencer Moon of the Simpson College men’s track and field team has been named the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Men’s Outdoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Moon joins six other Storm athletes on the USTFCCCA Men’s All-Academic list. All seven athletes contributed to a 3.452 team grade point average that led the American Rivers Conference and achieved the USTFCCA’s All-Academic Team award for the 14th time since 2010.
Moon coupled his success in the classroom with a multitude of achievements on the track, including a national championship in the outdoor 10,000 meters. His recognition as the USTFCCCA’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year comes after sweeping the Association’s Midwest Regional Athlete of the Year award for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Moon earned four All-American trophies, four all-region honors, three conference titles and many other accolades during this final year at Simpson.
Along with Moon, Max Cleveland, Blake DePhillips, Adam Gruhn, Clarke Latcham, James Murray and Joseph Sams were Simpson’s All-Academic Individuals.
To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.30 and must have met at least one of the following athletic standards: competed in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finished the regular season ranked in the national top 50 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 35 in a relay event on the official NCAA descending order list.
