The countdown of Norwalk’s Top 10 Sports Stories from the past school year has reached No. 8: senior Redek Born surpassing 1,000 career points and leading the Warrior boys basketball team to 18 wins and a share of the Little Hawkeye Conference championship.
Born reached the 1,000-point mark on December 12 at Lewis Central and finished his career with 1,467 points and 133 made 3-pointers. The University of Northern Iowa signee was named First Team All-State for the second straight year and led Class 4A with 23 points per game.
Born told KNIA Sports that it was a dream come true to join his older brother Bowen and other Norwalk greats in the 1,000-point club. “It was definitely cool to reach that mark, but I think I kind of owe it to the coaching staff and all the players that I’ve played with,” he said. “They allow me to kind of do my thing and score the ball. It was obviously a proud accomplishment, but we’ve got some bigger things to take care of.”
The Warriors finished 18-6 on the season, split the conference title with Dallas Center-Grimes and reached the 4A Substate finals before losing to eventual repeat state champion West Des Moines Valley. Senior Aidan Harder averaged 10.2 points and 5.5 boards per game and three other Norwalk players scored at least 6.4 points per contest.
In addition to his ability to score from anywhere on the floor, Born added 4.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists a night. He totaled 35 steals and 43 3-pointers, shooting 52 percent from the field and 86 percent at the free throw line.
